Is it time to start working with vegan business owners?

If you are reading this in January when the episode came out then it’s Veganuary. A month where many non-vegans sign up to a challenge to go vegan for the month, with the aim to keep it going or incorporate meat-free meals more often. There tends to be a plethora of brands bringing out vegan products, albeit they disappointingly disappear after the month!

I’ve been vegan for five years and did try a challenge of eating vegan at one point whilst I was vegetarian, however never did veganuary myself. As a business owner the fact that I’m a vegan business owner is part of my branding to a small extent, I mention it on my website and social media so that other vegan business owners know that it’s part of my ethics.

I wanted to share my current thoughts around whether we should be working with vegan businesses if you are a vegan business owner, not going in-depth or really researching it but more of a conversation.

Whether you should consider working with a vegan service provider for your business

“Often if you are looking at potentially working with another vegan business, you’re going to be supporting a small business too”

What I covered

  • A huge advantage of working with other vegans is that your ethics align with the people that you are working with. It can be very helpful if someone has an understanding of what you do and why, plus they will have an understanding of the mindset of your vegan customers. You are likely supporting a small business or freelancer too.
  • Ultimately it’s important to consider a number of factors when you are choosing who to work with and hire, they need to be able to achieve the results, be within your budget, someone you will like working with and have a style of work that you like. Business owners want to find the best service provider, regardless of whether they are vegan.
  • Supporting vegan businesses is a way of supporting the vegan lifestyle.
  • Personally I wouldn’t strictly work with vegan clients and I wouldn’t only hire vegan business owners at this point in time, however it would be a consideration and a huge bonus.
  • As customers demand more and better from customers, being transparent in how your business is run could be a consideration. If you are disclosing who you are working with (and I give an example of how website designers put a credit in the footer of websites often) then you might not want for your customers to click through to your supplier/service provider and see that their other customers are not very ethical for example.
  • Often if someone is vegan they also care about environmental impact and social justice issues too. Some of this will come through in the work that they do for you.

Key Takeaways

  • It could be beneficial for your brand to work with a vegan business owner when choosing who to hire.
  • Most important is skills and a personality fit, but sharing similar values or lifestyle is ideal!
  • Many vegans will share environmental concerns and this may feature in their services or the way they do business too.
